Raymell Mourice "Ray" Rice is a professional American football running back who is currently serving an indefinite suspension by the National Football League. He played college football for Rutgers University and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He is ranked as the Ravens' second all-time leading rusher behind Jamal Lewis with 5,940 yards, and is also second in rushing attempts and rushing touchdowns, and third in combined touchdowns. Rice was arrested and subsequently indicted for third-degree aggravated assault on March 27, 2014, relating to an incident where he punched his then-fianc�e in the face. The blow knocked her unconscious. The incident became a prominent controversy after TMZ released a video of the encounter, which led to an NFL policy change regarding how it handles domestic violence cases. Rice's contract was terminated by the Ravens on September 8, 2014, following the release of an additional video of the incident.
