John W. Rhodes is a former Republican member of the North Carolina General Assembly. A real estate broker from Huntersville, North Carolina, Rhodes represented North Carolina's Ninety-Eighth House district for two terms. He was defeated in the 2006 Republican primary by Thom Tillis, losing by an almost 2-to-1 margin. Rhodes was the first member of the North Carolina House to call for the resignation of Speaker James B. Black, after Black was accused of ethics violations and malfeasance. Though Rhodes' impact in the case is open to debate, Black later resigned from the House after winning re-election in 2006 and was convicted on state and federal charges in 2007. A grassroots effort called John Rhodes Day is celebrated March 22 of each year. Rhodes is running as a write-in candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2014.
