Description
Matthew Thomas Fitzpatrick is an English professional golfer who made the cut at the 2013 Open Championship and finished as low amateur. At the 2013 Open Championship, Fitzpatrick and Jimmy Mullen were the only amateurs to make the cut. In addition, Fitzpatrick was awarded The Silver Medal for being the low amateur finishing up at +10, 294 to Mullen's 299. Fitzpatrick won the 2012 Boys Amateur Championship and played college golf for the Northwestern Wildcats in 2013 before leaving the school in January 2014.
Fitzpatrick won the 2013 U.S. Amateur, earning invitations to the 2014 Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, and Open Championship if he remains an amateur. The win took him to the top of the World Amateur Golf Rankings which earned him the Mark H. McCormack Medal.
Fitzpatrick announced he was turning professional after the 2014 U.S. Open. In doing so, Fitzpatrick forfeits his exemption to the 2014 Open Championship. His professional debut was at the European Tour's Irish Open.
