Description
John Emery is a Canadian bobsledder who competed in the mid-1960s. He won a gold medal in the four-man event at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. He was born in Montreal, Quebec.
John Emery was born in Montreal, Canada along with his brother Vic. John and Vic competed both in the 2 man and 4 man bobsleigh race where they were both drivers. John was the driver of the 4 man sleigh that won the gold at the 1964 Olympics. His brother Vic was the driver of the 2 man sleigh that took 4th place.
They had no sponsorship for their teams at the Olympics. They also had no practice track within Canada so the practiced on dry fields. Just before the 1964 Olympics they had their first actual runs in the bobsleighs at Lake Placid, NY.
Italy and Austria were heavily favored to win but Canada "walked away" with the Gold in the 4 man sleigh and both John and Vic Emery were given the Gold. John and Vic are both in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.
