Description
Christian Danner is a former race car driver from Germany.
The son of well-known car safety expert Max Danner, Christian started motor-racing in the Renault 5 cup. He advanced to Formula 2 and set the F2 lap record of the current configuration of the old Nrburgring, which also stands as the 3rd fastest lap around the track.
Danner won the inaugural Formula 3000 championship in 1985, and debuted in Formula One on 15 September 1985 for the all-German team Zakspeed. He eventually participated in 47 Grand Prix events. His best result was a lucky 4th place at the 1989 United States Grand Prix for Rial, having started 26th and last on the grid. He also managed one 6th place whilst driving for Arrows.
Danner was the first of what would be a long line of Formula 3000 champions who would fail to make an impact in Formula One, with Jean Alesi, Olivier Panis and Juan Pablo Montoya being the only F3000 champions to actually win a Grand Prix.
Danner competed in Japanese Formula 3000 in 1990 driving for Leyton House's F3000 team. He scored 4 points and was ranked 14th. In 1991 he drove in one race of the British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton in a BMW M3.
