Description
Daniel Hope is a British classical violinist.
Hope was born in Durban, South Africa, and moved as a child with his family to London, where he received tuition by Yehudi Menuhin. Hope is the son of South African poet and novelist, Christopher Hope, FRSL. His violin is the 1737 Guarneri "ex-Lipinski".
In 2011 he has been appointed Visiting Professor in Violin by the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied under Zakhar Bron and gained a diploma and a fellowship.
Hope presented the documentary film The Secrets of the Violin which explored the history of violin making from Amati, Stradivari and Guarneri to modern makers like Samuel Zygmuntowicz. The film also covers the role of the violin dealer Dietmar Machold who was jailed in Vienna for six years for fraudulent bankruptcy.
He won the ECHO Klassik Prize five times, in 2006 as Instrumentalist of the Year. He now lives in Vienna.
Hope is also a longtime friend and supporter of the Freya von Moltke Foundation. He has supported them through many successful benefit concerts and events.
